Book Kelly

Hi there! Thanks for your interest in my trainings.

Ever since I started serving as an occupational therapist 21 years ago, I’ve been on a mission to change the way we view what is often called ‘challenging, disruptive or purposeful’ behavior. My passion to inspire people to think differently, dig deeper, and discover what is at the root cause of the behaviors we may observe has grown in strength year after year. This passionate mission spills over into every single training that I provide.

I love educating others and sharing all about topics related to interoception, sensory processing, self-regulation, and mental health. My courses help attendees gain a better understanding of human behavior. To learn how to dig deep. To ask the right questions. To honor and validate each person’s unique inner experience. To implement an approach that nurtures regulation, safety, self-understanding, social connection, and meaningful life engagement. If we can do this, I believe that we can provide more effective, more kind, more meaningful supports so that our clients, students, and loved ones can flourish.

I work with each sponsoring organization to tailor a training that will provide the most meaningful information and support to the participants in attendance. You can choose from a variety of session lengths from 50-minute Keynote sessions to 2-day workshops.

Does this sound like something your organization needs? If so, please read on below.

Cheers to Learning Every Day,

Testimonials

“Kelly is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. She conveys a very clear message and provides a lot of practical examples and real-life stories which makes her information come to life.”

“Wow!!! I would give this session 100 stars if I could. Kelly is a fantastic speaker who shares a very powerful message that completely changes the way we understand behavior and self-regulation. THANK YOU!!!!!”

“I had so many ‘aha’ moments during Kelly’s talk. The information she shared about interoception has completely changed the way I view ‘challenging behavior.’ We need to dig deeper and Kelly teaches us how to do this and get one step closer to truly understanding our students.”

“As an autistic person, I found Kelly’s session on interoception to be extremely helpful in understanding myself better. I thought the saying ‘butterflies in your stomach’ was just a saying. I didn’t realize that people actually felt that way. More people need to know about interoception. It will help them understand people like me better. That would be nice.”

“This was by far the best continuing education session I have ever been too (and I have been to a lot!). Kelly’s presentation style is engaging and friendly. I could listen to her speak for hours. I am so excited to use all of the practical strategies that she shared today.“

“Kelly’s work single-handedly changes everything we know about emotional regulation and behavior management.”

Kelly’s Topics

Interoception, The Eighth Sense: Evidenced-Based Solutions for Nurturing Self-Regulation and Social Connection

During this training, participants will gain an in-depth understanding about interoception, including the impact this sense has on the development of social-emotional skills. Additionally, participants will learn evidence-based strategies for improving interoception, including coverage of The Interoception Curriculum, a step-by-step framework for enhancing interoceptive awareness in a kind and validating manner.

Interoception Intensive: Advanced Application of Assessment and Intervention (2 or more days)

This interactive training is designed to provide a solid understanding of interoception as well as in-depth instruction on the assessment and development of interoception. Many hands-on opportunities for guided practice of assessment and intervention supports are included in this training. Due to the interactive nature of this training, it is ideal for small groups of 100 or less.

Interoception Assessment: Dilemmas and Practical Solutions

One of the most debated topics in the interoception field is on how to best measure the interoceptive experiences of a variety of learners. This course will provide a review of the most commonly used interoception measures, including in-depth instruction on the use of 2 specific assessment tools: The Comprehensive Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness & Observation Scale of Interoception Experience.

The 5 Keys to Successfully Supporting Behavior Regulation

Current behavior trends have an over-focus on compliance and external behavioral supports and fail to address the underlying needs that often lead to so-called “challenging behavior”. This course presents 5 key areas that should be a support consideration for every single person: Finding the WHY, Communication, Sensory Needs, Predictability, and a Structured Approach to Emotional Understanding. This course is filled with practical evidence-based strategies as well as first-person accounts from autistics and other neurodivergents.

Interoception, The Eighth Sense: Through the Lens of an Autistic Adult

(this powerful session is co-presented with an autistic adult–additional presenter fees apply.)

One of the most overlooked foundations of independence and emotional well-being is interoception, our eighth sense. Many children and adults experience interoception extremes ranging from body signals that are too small and go unnoticed or body signals that are too big and create overwhelm and distraction.  Often this inner experience goes unnoticed or misunderstood by others. This session provides multiple personal accounts of what it is like to live with interoceptive extremes, as well as insights on the real-life application of strategies for outsmarting and/or improving the interoception experience.

Unsafe, Unheard and Misunderstood:

Trauma from Being Atypical Living in a Typical World

(this powerful session is co-presented with an autistic adult–additional presenter fees apply.)

Many times, traditional trauma viewpoints do not fully capture the experience of neurodivergents resulting in many children and adults being misunderstood and many underlying needs overlooked. This course will encourage you to think beyond the traditional understanding of trauma and consider causes of trauma that are not typically considered within traditional trauma framework.

These include trauma from:

  • Sensory Trauma
  • Social Trauma
  • Compliance Trauma
  • Neurological Trauma
  • Medical Trauma
