Description

What’s Inside the Book

Noticing My Body Signals is Book #1 in the My Body Signals series.

This 78-page interactive storybook helps readers notice and explore body signals through hands-on experiments, reflection, and story-based learning. Designed to be read in parts—whatever fits attention spans or time available—each page invites readers to pause and share what they notice happening inside their bodies.

Join scientist Dr. Curious and classmates Vic, Jo, Todd, and Claire as they explore body signals connected to hands, feet, mouths, eyes, ears, hearts, brains, and more. Readers are invited to playfully experiment with their bodies while exploring what signals their bodies send in response. As the class share their discoveries, readers see body signals described in many different ways through drawings and even on a communication device: tingly, breezy, sparkly, sharp, fuzzy, jumpy, blurry, watery, tight, warm, buzzing, “too much,” “I don’t know.” Throughout the story, Dr. Curious reminds readers that there’s no wrong body signal to notice and no wrong way to experience what’s happening inside.

Blending story, science, and flexible learning experiences, the book grows alongside readers as they continue discovering new things about their body signals over time. Whether read at bedtime, during classroom reflection, or in a therapy session, Noticing My Body Signals turns reading moments into opportunities for connection and body trust.

About the My Body Signals Series

The My Body Signals series is a 3-part interactive journey through interoception, our sense of what’s happening inside our bodies.

Each book explores a different stage of interoceptive awareness through story, hands-on experiments, reflection, and curiosity-based discussion.

  • Book #1: Noticing My Body Signals focuses on noticing and describing body signals.
  • Book #2: Connecting My Body Signals explores what body signals might mean for each person.
  • Book #3: Regulating My Body Signals (forthcoming) will explore responding to body signals with individualized supports and strategies.

While each book can be enjoyed independently, together they create a deeper journey into body awareness, self-understanding, communication, and connection.

What’s Included

So much more than a kids’ book! Each purchase includes the complete Noticing My Body Signals experience:

Why This Book Matters

Offers a ready-to-use way for busy adults to foster interoception growth.

With interactive experiments, thoughtful prompts for reflection, and language that promotes curiosity, the interactive story supports exploring body signals. No extra prep required!

Helps adults and kids build a shared language for body signals.

Readers move past memorizing emotion words and instead discover personal, meaningful ways to describe what their bodies feel like, deepening real understanding of how they feel inside.

Honors every inner experience while modeling curiosity for adults to mirror.

Dr. Curious helps adults model affirming and compassionate curiosity, showing kids (and themselves) that all body signals are valid and personally defined.

Shows many ways to express body signals.

Readers see characters communicate their inner world through art, gestures, movement, typing, and mouth words—reminding us that interoception isn’t limited to one form of communication.

Extends and deepens learning from The Interoception Curriculum.

While a standalone resource, Book #1 aligns with Section 1 of the Curriculum, offering additional practice with noticing and describing body signals.

Brings interoception concepts to life through story.

Vic, Jo, Todd, Claire, and Dr. Curious show that every body feels differently and that not knowing or not wanting to feel is still a valid part of the body-signal experience.

Adds to inclusive, neuro-affirming practice.

The story normalizes interoceptive diversity through messages of validation and acceptance.

Who This Book Is For

Designed for adults and kids to discover together. Noticing My Body Signals creates a shared space to explore what’s happening inside. You’ll learn together, one page, pause, and experiment at a time.

About the Authors

photo of Maddie and Kelly the authors

I’m the mom, Kelly Mahler (OT). When my daughter, Maddie, was in third grade, she came home upset after “failing” a quiz on emotions. The class had been given scenarios and asked how they would feel. When Maddie said she’d feel angry if someone she loved died, and anxious while playing tag at recess, her teacher marked both answers as wrong. Those moments stuck with her (and with me).

Now 15, Maddie has grown into a spirited, deeply feeling, and creative teen who sees the world with insight and heart. She loves volleyball and has a deep passion for corgis (the inspiration behind our family’s two corgis, Caty and Otis). Her experiences and reflections helped spark the idea for this book.

Together, we created Noticing My Body Signals after realizing how many children’s books try to tell kids what emotions should feel like. We wanted to make something that wondered instead of told; a story that celebrates inner diversity and helps readers explore their own unique body signals.

Our hope is that every child (and adult) who turns these pages feels invited to trust the body signals they notice and knows it’s okay not to have all the answers.
