Course Description:

Emerging science and reports of lived experience suggest that interoception, or the sense of how the body feels, can be impacted from concussion or other brain injury. In addition to the obvious neurological impact of a concussion/TBI on the interoceptive sense, the psychological trauma that can often accompany a brain injury can affect a client’s ability to feel safe in noticing and trusting interoceptive sensations. The resulting interoception differences can have a significant impact on a person’s ability to heal and function in daily life. This course will provide an overview of the connection between concussion/TBI and interoception with a strong focus on practical interoception-based strategies that can be used with this client population. What you’ll learn:

  • Why interoception needs to be a primary consideration for clients with concussion/TBI (yet is one of the most overlooked aspects of a person’s healing program).
  • What is a concussion/TBI and more specifically how it impacts interoception
  • What is interoception and what interoception differences might occur as a result of a concussion/TBI (including how these interoception differences can impact daily function and the healing process)

So, who are we?:

We are Meghan Chemidlin and Kelly Mahler and first met almost a decade ago at Elizabethtown College where Meghan was a bright and shining OT graduate student in a class that Kelly was teaching. Fast forward to present day, and Meghan and Kelly are OT colleagues that share a mutual passion for interoception and the power that incorporating interoception science can have for the clients we serve. They have had the opportunity to speak together on interoception and the concussion population and are in the process of publishing their work, Impact of an Interoception-Based Intervention on Self-Regulation in Adults with Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Pilot Study (forthcoming).

Megan Headshot To ComeMore about Meghan: Meghan earned her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Elizabethtown College and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist, Functional Vision Rehabilitation Specialist and Autism Spectrum Certified Clinical Specialist. She helps kids, teens, and adults with neurological conditions think, move and perform everyday tasks better even if they feel like they plateaued or never got identified. Meghan primarily works with individuals who have sustained concussions, though also works with kids, teens and adults diagnosed with ADHD, Autism and other neurological conditions. She takes a holistic approach to treatment, aimed at treating each person as a unique individual, helping them reach their greatest potential. Self-regulation is rarely an area addressed by professionals when treating an individual with a concussion but Meghan is currently the only person in the world incorporating interoception interventions for the concussion population. Her doctoral research is currently in the process of being published which examined the effectiveness of her adapted version of The Interoception Curriculum with individuals who sustained concussions. This study yielded positive results in the areas of self-regulation and executive functioning skills. She is being sought out by professionals, clinics and conferences around the world.
Kelly MahlerMore about Kelly Mahler: I earned a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Misericordia University, Dallas, PA and have been an occupational therapist for 20 years, serving school-aged children and adults. I’m winner of multiple awards including the 2020 American Occupational Therapy Association Emerging and Innovative Practice Award & a Mom’s Choice Gold Medal. I am an international speaker and enjoy presenting on topics related to the twelve resources I’ve authored including:
