Course Description:

If you are seeking to learn, grow, stay current in the feeding supports you provide, this course is for you. Typically, most areas evolve and adapt as people learn from new science and lived experiences. The areas of feeding, body autonomy and interoception are no different—we’ve come a long way, but we all have a responsibility to continue to evolve and adapt to keep pace with the latest evidence and voices from people living with ARFID.

This course will discuss important aspects of affirming feeding supports that naturally nurture interoception in the process. Learn how past feeding practices, based in compliance, can lead to a host of issues including conditioning a person to ignore interoceptive cues such as hunger and thirst in order to survive their world.

Feeding challenges and ARFID can be a complicated area to support. The goal of this course is to provide practical, easy to follow strategies that build feelings of safety and confidence instead of triggering panic, guilt and shame. The strategies will not merely focus on the food itself but also attitudes toward food, the eating environment, sensory regulation, and the language used surrounding eating and feeding. If you want to help clients develop trust and a positive relationship with food and their bodies, this course is for you.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to use the most affirming language when discussing ARFID, feeding challenges and interoception
  • How the DSM-V criteria for ARFID does/does not capture and affirm the actual experience of feeding challenges
  • Why interoception is an important aspect of feeding as well as supporting ARFID
  • We will learn from lived experience about how many common feeding approaches can derail interoception.
  • The impact of interoceptive discomfort and pain on the drive to eat. This includes sensory pain as well as medical conditions such as reflux and food intolerances
  • How preferred foods (boxed and processed foods) are demonized by diet culture and how healthism and nutritionism can show up in therapy spaces and impact parents
  • How to set affirming feeding goals and letting go of healthism and nutritionism
  • How to define what progress with feeding strategies can look like. We often end up defining what progress “should” look like for people, which often backfires. Challenging these ideas is important.
  • How to determine the elements of respectful/affirming strategies and understand how they support interoception/body listening.
  • Practical strategies to include:
    • What to consider when it comes to the feeding environment and structure. When is implementing a structure beneficial?
    • Challenging rigid feeding practices. What are alternatives?
    • Accommodations and menu adaptations
    • Support parents with grief and acceptance
    • Sensory strategies for feeding
    • Tips for supporting interoception and body listening

Naureen Hunani

More about Naureen: Naureen Hunani (she/her) is a multiply-neurodivergent registered dietitian with over 18 years of experience. She is the founder of RDs for Neurodiversity, a neurodiversity-informed online continuing education platform and community for dietitians and helping professionals.

She has a private practice in Montreal, Canada, where she supports people struggling with various feeding and eating challenges through a trauma-informed, weight-inclusive and anti-oppressive approach. She is the creator of the Neurodiversity Affirming Model®, a framework developed to disrupt, challenge and dismantle the current oppressive models that exclude the feeding and eating experiences of neurodivergent and disabled people. Naureen has extensive experience working with neurodivergent children, adults and families. She has had the privilege to share her knowledge at national and international conferences. In 2023, she received ASAN’s Nothing About Us Without US Award. She is passionate about supporting pro-justice and weight-inclusive professionals striving to build liberatory practices.
