Course Description:

If you’re interested in learning about the intersection between interoception and alexithymia, this interactive course is a great place to start. Alexithymia, often described as difficulty identifying and describing how one feels, is a complex experience that many people encounter. Interoception, our internal sense of what’s happening inside our bodies, is deeply connected to our ability to recognize and interpret how we feel and differences within this sense have been connected to alexithymia.

This course will summarize recent alexithymia research, as well as perhaps more importantly, provide stories and insights from multiple alexithymics on their inner felt experience. Get readty to bust myths about alexithymia, explore how societal invalidation can play a role in alexithymia and learn affirming strategies helpful in improving alexithymia when that is a meaningful goal (hint: it is not showing flashcards of facial expressions).

What you’ll learn:

  • What is alexithymia? What is interoception? How are these two deeply intertwined?
  • The latest scientific research and lived experiences that clarify how alexithymia is often linked to trauma, prolonged stress, and invalidation.
  • How alexithymics explain their inner experience, including what has helped their journey and what has not
  • Common myths associated with alexithymia and how to reframe these myths
  • Understand the relationship between alexithymia and interoception, specifically how prolonged disconnection from internal cues can make it challenging to identify emotional needs, comfort, and regulation.
  • What works and what doesn’t: Explore affirming strategies to cultivate body connection, self-understanding and authentic emotional expression
